A Game of Chance: Insurance and the Concept of Fortuity

Location: Lloyd’s Old Library
On May 6, Richard H. Nicolaides, Jr. and Monica T. Sullivan will present on the concept of “fortuity.”

Commercial insurance products are designed to address the wide range of risks faced by businesses operating across industries and jurisdictions. While the scope of coverage may vary by policy and product, all insurance is fundamentally grounded in the principle of fortuity—the idea that insurance is intended to cover losses arising from chance or unforeseen events.

Hosted by the British Insurance Law Association (BILA), the session, “A Game of Chance: Insurance and the Concept of Fortuity,” will address fortuity in insurance in the context of public health-focused and regulatory-forcing litigation in the United States, including climate change, gun violence, opioid, PFAS, and social media litigation.
